EDO6279 - Worgret Road, Wareham: geophysical survey 2010

Geophysical survey of approximately 4.67 ha prior to development of the site for housing. A full gradiometer survey collected data every 0.125m proceeding zigzag across grids measuring 20m by 20m. Areas of magnetic debris and disturbance were located throughout the survey area and were typical of areas under agricultural management. Five areas of anomalies were found which indicated archaeological potential. In Area 1 in the south-west of the site, there was a possible zigzag shaped linear slot trench in an area of post holes or pits. In Area 2, which was north-east of Area 1, possible post holes or pits with an orientation suggestive of a structure. In Area 3, the central southern area of the site, the strength of the anomalies indicated modern activity possibly military. Area 4 in the central western part of the site was an area of possible pits with close proximity to a probable ditch of archaeological potential. Area 5 comprised the eastern extent of a linear ditch oriented north-east/south-west of probable archaeological potential as well as north-south aligned linear anomalies of probable agricultural origin. Medieval or post-medieval 'cultural material' was frequently observed across the site and interpreted as evidence of scatter manuring. A number of flint artefacts including flakes were found suggesting usage by prehistoric people although there was no evidence of a settlement in the vicinity.
