Description

Archaeological observations and recording during groundworks relating to the modernisation of the museum, including an extension to the building. No archaeological features or deposits were observed relating to the 16th-century origin of the building, the fire of 1876 or subsequent restoration. The archaeologists on site felt that the limited nature of the groundworks did not preclude the survival of archaeological remains elsewhere beneath the building elsewhere, though it was noted that the surfaces rested directly on natural clay in the areas observed.
