Description
A watching brief took place during groundworks for a rear extension to the property commissioned by the owners as part of planning consent. The groundworks comprised reduction of ground level by 200mm within an area of approximately 8m by 8m and excavation of 650mm wide strip footings to around 800mm below ground level. The trench revealed the basic stratigraphic sequence to a depth of 600mm. Two possible archaeological features were identified. These were both flat-bottomed linear feature around 500mm wide filled with dark greyish brown clay loam, oriented to the house layout and the extension footings. These were heavily disturbed and undated but appear to have been wall footings from which walling material had been robbed. This together with their orientation normal to the existing building suggested that they were part of an eighteenth century structure or earlier. Small quantities of modern building materials, clay pipe and post-medieval ceramics were recovered and not retained.
