EDO6375 - Barton Farm Sherborne; excavation

'The investigations initially comprised the excavation of sixteen trenches in the area of proposed mixed use development. These were each 50m long by a minimum of 1.6m wide. A further six trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed balancing ponds, each measuring 10m long by a minimum 1.6m wide. All of the trenches were positioned on the ground using a hand-held GPS, those positioned in the main area were based on a geo-referenced plan of the geophysical survey results. All soil removal was undertaken by tracked mechanical excavator using a wide toothless bucket, and stored alongside each trench, separated from any subsoil as necessary. Stripping by mechanical excavator ceased at the level at which archaeological deposits or natural subsoil was exposed.'
