Description

The survey aimed to assess how useful the techniques of electrical resistance topography (ERT), ground penetrating radar (GPR) and also resistivity surveys were in determining the internal structures of barrows. The survey focussed on 'Barrow 52' one of SAM 21908 plus one other in the group (Barrow 56). The ERT survey noted some slumping at the southern edge and indentations near the summit on the western side which may indicated digging. A ditch was identified. The resistivity survey found a low resistance ring around the mound, particularly high resistance on the summit to the south and west and higher resistance on the lower north-western side. Both techniques provided a mostly corresponding analysis of the construction of the mound and ditch, typical of chalk geology mounds.
