EDO6434 - Bridport Literary and Scientific Institute, East Street, Bridport; building recording 2017

A programme of historic building recording and archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out at the Grade II listed building as commissioned on behalf of the Bridport Area Development Trust. This was a condition of planning consent for the redevelopment of the building. The historic building recording comprised photographs of the interior and exterior taken before and during the renovation works and recorded in relation to plans and elevations provided by the architect. Archaeological monitoring of the groundworks took place and 8 test pits were excavated in the basement. Alterations carried out during the life of the building were identified and recorded as the renovation progressed. This enabled the reversal of some of the effects of the alterations so that the interior more closely resembled the mid-19th century layout and design. No artefacts or features of archaeological significance were found.
