Description

The site of a waterlogged wooden structure reported as consisting of wooden stakes with wattle was investigated by trenching and auguring. The soil build-up on the site was shown to be hill-wash to depths up to 4 feet over the natural clay. No distinct horizon was observed. Pieces of medieval pottery and fragments of brushwood were found, but no traces of stakes. In the light of evidence of repeated attempts to drain the hollow, it was concluded that the feature was the remains of a brushwood drain of a type known to have been used locally in living memory.
