Description

A programme of monitoring during works in the south transept and construction of new drainage around the abbey church. Victorian building works were revealed to have been highly destructive, with the 18th-century floor and medieval floors and deposits removed to a depth of 0.5m. Outside, elements of the medieval graveyard to the south of the unfinished nave and the medieval and post-medieval graveyard to the south of the choir were revealed. Parts of the north chancel chapel and the heavily-robbed out remains of the Lady Chapel were recorded. The remains of a post-Dissolution building or structure were recorded on the north side of the abbey church. Finds included a small quantity of 12-13th century pottery, and architectural fragments from the later church and ancillary monastic ranges. Four architectural fragments belonging to the earlier church were identified.
