EDO6559 - Durweston pipeline; earthwork survey and observations and recording 1997

Slight earthworks to the south east of Durweston were mapped before a pipeline was inserted across them by Wessex Water. Observations and recording were undertaken during topsoil stripping and digging of the trench for the water pipe. The earthworks were revealed to be a series of small, square and rectangular enclosures situated just above the floodplain of the river Stour. Though some irregularities were evident, no clear building platforms could be identified. During groundworks the earthworks were shown to be simple earthen banks or lynchets. Finds recovered in the course of work were primarily medieval pottery of 12th to 14th-century date.
