Description

Observations and recording during building of a new vestry and the removal of floors inside the church. Structural evidence of an earlier, probably 12th-century church was revealed, as well as evidence of several later repairs and alterations. Finds included an important collection of 15th and 16th-century floor tiles imported from France and the Low Countries. One hundred and twenty graves of medieval and post-medieval date were recorded: eighteen in the chancel, twenty in the nave, and the rest under the north aisle and in the churchyard. A piece of roof slate inscribed with a list of names in late medieval script was found in a medieval grave in the chancel. A scatter of mesolithic flint was found in residual contexts.
