Description

Charles Bean dug three small trial holes in 1955, seeking to determine the extent and precise location of the villa excavated by Buckman in 1876. The first was near the gate on the north side of the field, the second was 85 feet into the field, and the third hole was nine feet to the north of this. The first revealed some discolouration and broken lias stone, the second exposed tessellated pavement at a depth of 10 inches, and a wall was found in the third hole. Bean recommended fresh excavation.
