Description

Poole Museums Service excavated three trial trenches near St Michael's Hall, Blandford Road, Hamworthy in July 1982. Trench 1 was 8 m long and 2 m wide and contained late Iron Age features. Trenches 2 and 3 were excavated across the line of H P Smith's postulated Roman road. They measured 7 m by 0.6 m and 4 m by 0.6 m respectively. No trace of the road was found. Three phases of Iron Age features was identified in Trench 1. The first phase comprised shallow gullies and a slot on a NE-SW alignment, the second phase was represented by two pits and the third phase had a larger ditch on an E-W alignment. Features in Trenches 2 and 3 were undated. The finds included a proportion of Northern French imported pottery and Dressel amphora sherds.
