EWX1306 - Wytch Farm Oilfield: Newton Heath Clay Works (D-Gathering Station Flowline), Studland; excavation 1988

The Newton Clay Works evident as a spread of redeposited white ball clay on the northern side of the Norden to Goathorn railway, about 300m south east of Newton Farm. The boundaries of the spread were marked by the track to Newton Cottage and a low, curvilinear earthwork on the south side. Trial pits showed that the clay was 100-350mm deep, and sealed a well-defined buried soil 50-110mm deep of humic sand. Two parallel alignments of stones could be seen in the central part of the spread, and a transect 0.5m wide was cut perpendicular to these stone alignments which appeared to consist of dressed stones set vertically in the ground. Several wooden planks were observed on the ground outside the lines of stones.
