Description

A watching brief carried out by Wessex Archaeology during groundworks for construction of a new sorting office and associated facilities by Spetisbury Construction. Foundation and service trenches were excavated by machine. Observations revealed disturbance by construction of existing and adjacent buildings, to a depth which suggested that archaeological deposits prior to the 19th century were unlikely to have survived in this area. No finds of earlier date were observed in the disturbed deposits, and the presence of two small sections of dark soils above natural gravel may indicate that there was no occupation here before the nineteenth-century buildings were constructed. Wessex Archaeology site code: W612/36606. RCHME Microfilm Index PRN: 4524.
