Description
Wessex Archaeology conducted an archaeological watching brief during groundworks for the Wareham Sewer Replacement Scheme between November 1994 and June 1995. The route of the main sewer ran from the SE pumping Station (just inside the east walls of the town) along Comiger Lane, Church Lane, Church Green, across the quayside car park to South Street.
The groundworks did not entail the disturbance of significant archaeological deposits because virtually all the deep, shuttered sections of the trench were in areas of previous ground disturbance.
Part of a human jaw bone was found near the junction of Church Lane and Church Street in the backfill of an earlier gas pipe trench. A Medieval soil horizon was located at Mayor's Quay with waterlogged remains suggestive of a damp floodplain meadow or marsh. No archaeological features were observed in association with it. Site code: 38631. [1]
RCHME Microfilm Index PRN: 5279.
