Description

Archaeological evaluation carried out prior to a proposed residential development. Works commissioned by Louis Hamilton Construction Ltd. Development area covered 2300sq m, approx. 75m west of Church of St Peter. 3 trenches excavated (each 10m x 1.75m) representing a 2% sample of the site. Excavation revealed a number of former gullies orientated so as to drain water from the ridge of the north facing slope. 4 close set gullies in trench 3 were undercut; 2 of these were stone lined. This suggested the re-cutting of the same ditch alignment as it silted. 12-14th century pottery was recovered from their fills. 1 similar gully was identified in trench 1 and was thought to date from the same period. Another gully in trench 2 was of more sturdy construction and thought to be of a slightly later date, Later / Post -Medieval. A single post hole was observed. This contained small fragments of abraded 12-14th century pottery. In view of the large quantity of similarly abraded fragments being derived from elsewhere on site it was felt that this could very well be residual and did not date the feature. The post hole existed in isolation and was accordingly interpreted as a fence / boundary marker rather than being indicative of a larger structure.
