Description

Assessment of the proposed site of a new Visitor Centre in the park recorded previous excavated evidence for prehistoric and Roman activity. The report concluded that previous archaeological work in the surrounding area indicated a moderate to high potential for prehistoric and Roman remains, though there was little evidence from the immediate area of the site. A garden feature west of the house, The Mount, might be an enhanced Bronze Age round barrow. It was noted that the formal gardens are an addition of 1918-20, and that the site proposed for the visitor centre is depicted as a field on the tithe map of 1838. A map of 1759 shows the site outside the area associated with the Parsonage, and so unlikely to have been part of the gardens. An undated possible wall trench found in the evaluation was thought likely to be post-medieval and associated with the development of the house and park.
