Description

Preliminary evaluation, consisting of test-pitting, field walking, an auger survey, geophysical survey, earthwork survey and aerial photographic transcription undertaken for the route of the preferred Brown route for the proposed road improvements. Few pieces of worked flint and Romano-British pottery recovered south of Combe Farm, some on Southdown Ridge. Small quantities of prehistoric and Roman material recovered from field walking on The Knoll. Well preserved strip lynchets in dry valley at Lower Bincombe. Extensive ancient field systems, Bronze Age Barrow Group (ring-ditches suggested by geophysical survey) and early prehistoric material revealed on Ridgeway Hill. A desk-based assessment (Event UID:1308393) and an evaluation (Event UID: 1048183) were also carried out.
