Description
Lilian Ladle conducted an archaeological watching brief on the excavation of 14 post pits at the Rempstone Centre on My 30th 1995, as enhancement work was being carried out. Fourteen pits were dug by hand for a fence running north-south along the eastern side of the Somerfield supermarket. Each post hole was approximately 0.5m wide and 0.5m deep. The area was very disturbed, with large amounts of Purbeck stone rubble and brick overlying a black humic soil.
Two pits had been disturbed by the laying of drains, and no archaeological features were observed in the other pits. There were no finds from the bases or sides of the pits, but two small sherds of medieval cooking pot and numerous post-medieval finds were recovered from the spoil.
