Description

AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation on land adjacent to Somerfield Store during August 2001. A single trench was excavated in advance of proposed extension works. The trench recorded a sequence of post medieval and modern layers sealing a humic sand horizon of possible medieval date. This layer sealed the upper fill of a pit containing 12th century pottery. This is considered to be evidence of medieval activity behind the South Street frontage.
