EWX2091 - Pilkington Tiles Factory Site, Road, Hamworthy, Poole; desk-based assessment 1999

Terrain Archaeology undertook a desk-based assessment of the site of the former Pilkington Tiles Factory south of Shapwick Road, Hamworthy in August 1999. The assessment revealed no archaeological sites and findspots on the site. However, it lay to the south of an important Iron Age port, a possible Roman conquest period supply base and a Roman site with evidence for salt-working and other industrial activity. These sites may continue into the area of the Site. There is little evidence for medieval activity but a series of pits and ditches have been found in the area adjacent to the northwestern side of the Site. In the post-medieval period, the site was farmland until it was developed for industrial uses in the 19th century. The northwestern part of the site was never developed.
