Description

Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation of the site for the proposed Hengistbury Head Outdoor Education and Field Studies Centre. This was preceded by a geophysical survey. Eight machine trenches were excavated, some targeting geophysical anomalies. The evaluation revealed significant prehistoric activity including a pit containing Early Bronze Age collared urn fragments and carbonised hazel nutshells and crab apples. Extensive evidence of late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age activity was also discovered including a previously unrecorded ring ditch, 12m in diameter, a Late Bronze Age urn with cremated bone and a number of postholes and Iron Age pottery. A small quantity of Mesolithic flint was recovered from Trench 1. (1)
