Description

Southern Archaeological Services conducted a desk based assesment of the archaeological potential of land off Rosemary Lane, Abbotsbury prior to May 2000. The work was undertaken in advance of proposed development of the site for housing and car parking. Abbotsbury has known prehistoric, Saxon and medieval settlement, although there is no evidence for the site itself being used for anything other than agriculture or allotments prior to the 20th century. Documentary and cartographic evidence showed that the layout of Abbotsbury has changed little in the last 200 years and that it is unlikely to have changed much since the parish church and market were laid out in the 13th century. The site lies in the older eastern part of the town, close to known archaeological monuments. The archaeological potential of the site itself is unknown however, due to the lack of archaeological work that has been undertaken in the area.
