Description
1986 was the first season of archaeological work under a programme of consolidation and display of the castle ruins by the National Trust. This work encompassed the consolidation of the outer bailey wall and west bailey curtain walls; the excavation of post civil war and demolition layers in the SW gate, outer gatehouse, 3rd and 4th towers, west bailey and the inner ward gateway; the establishment of a route into the inner ward and keep via the original gateway; and the excavation and construction of a new pitched limestone path between the inner gateway and outer gateway. An EDM and photogrammetric survey were also undertaken.
Excavations in the West Bailey and Outer Gatehouse followed, in 1990, by investigations in the 3rd and 4th towers of the Outer Bailey. National Trust Project Reference Nos.: 1081,1082,1084 and 1086.
