EWX619 - Rogers' Almshouses, West Street, Poole; excavation 1974

Poole Museums Service excavated six trenches on the corner of West Street and New Orchard between April and August 1971, in advance of redevelopment. The trenches lay to the rear of the site of Roger's Almshouses. They were in the rear gardens of the properties on West Street and crossed the line of King Street, which was the precursor of New Orchard. The excavations revealed a small number of possible medieval features and scatters of medieval pottery, eighteenth and nineteenth century cess pits and rubbish pits and walls. Some fragments of clay tobacco pipe manufacturing debris were also found.
