Description

Following the excavation of four trial pits in 1973, the area of excavation was extended in 1975 and almost all of the area of the Town Cellars building to the east of Thames Street was excavated, except for the southwest corner which had been previously disturbed by the insertion of a fuel tank. The excavations revealed five major periods of activity. At the base of the sequence was the remains of a 10th-12th century AD oyster shell midden deposited on the sloping beach of an old shoreline. The remaining periods dated between the mid 13th century and the late 19th century and comprised a series of floors, occupation layers, pits and postholes. (1)
