Full Description
The former warehouse of Stephen Whetham and Sons is one of the largest warehouses in Bridport. It is a large three-storeyed stone building of two mid-19th century phases. It was built of coursed rubble with a pitched slate roof. The first phase comprises five bays at the north end, with a further six bays added to the south in 1862. The original external doors, including a range of loading doors, faced a courtyard on the eastern side, accessed from Gundry Lane via a gate with stone piers. The small square windows in the addition were in alternate bays, suggesting it provided secure storage. The entrance gate was overseen by an office lit by a bay window. <1-2>
A fire gutted the building three weeks prior to the survey. A relatively large, three-storeyed warehouse of two phases possibly built in the early to mid-19th century. Built of coursed rubble. The first phase is of five bays at north end of the building, it has small square windows, a taking-in door on the middle floor of the west elevation. The original south end is wall intact. The adjoining later phase of six bays has windows in alternate bays. Some small sash windows retain glazing bars. The octagonal office window in the south end bay of the east elevation overlooks the entrance to the yard. The fire destroyed the interior and the gabled roof, some slender cast-iron columns survive. The building has been fully restored and is used as a depository by Northover & Gilbert. <3> <5>
