Monument record MDO1202 - Lime Kiln near Horchester, Frome St Quintin
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A lime kiln recorded as ‘limekiln’ on the second edition (1900-2) Ordnance Survey map. The date of this kiln is not known but it is most likely to be late nineteenth century. The site was visited in 1992-93 by Peter Stanier, who could find no trace of the kiln structure. The remains of a sub-oval quarried area containing irregular sub-rectangular earthworks are visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The sub-rectangular earthworks may be those of the former lime kiln. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description
The remains of a sub-oval quarried area containing irregular sub-rectangular earthworks are visible on the south side of Haydon Lane on 1940s aerial photographs (2). The sub-rectangular earthworks comprise two semi-circular banks either side of an oval hollow. The feature measures approximately 8.5m by 8.8m and may be the remains of the former lime kiln. It is situated within a shallow oval depression approximately 48m by 22m with possible access onto Haydon Lane to the north; presumed to be an extractive pit associated with the lime kiln. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.
Duplicated with MDO42392.
The extractive pit is still visible as an earthwork on current Google Earth imagery.
