Summary

A late 19th century industrial building, part of the Court Mills complex. The stone two-storeyed building has a pitched slate roof, with a bell cote at the south end and an external cast iron staircase dated 1859. The interior formerly contained a machinery line which was steam-powered from a detached engine house. It is the only remaining example of late 19th-century fireproof construction in Bridport.

Full Description

A late 19th century industrial building, part of the Court Mills complex. It is of two storeys and attics, of dressed stone with brick dressings and a pitched slate roof, with a bell cote at the south end and a finial at the north end with spirally placed black brick headers and moulded brick cornice. Nine ranges of industrial windows. The North end has one range enclosed in a red brick relieving arch. At the South end is a cast iron external staircase supported on a brick wall, with elaborate ornamental balusters inscribed "J B Payne. Perry Street Works, Chard. 1859". The interior had one row of cast iron columns taking brick jack arches and cast iron brackets originally taking machinery line on the ground floor. It is now Bridport's only example of late 19th century fireproof construction (1).
