Full Description

(Centred at SY 57269013) A grass covered area of lynchets. These follow the contours on a fairly steep slope and are fairly regularly spaced and parallel. The lynchets are from 0.5m. To 3.0m. High, but in poor condition and mutilated by rabbits. From the extreme length of the lynchets it seems that they may be of Md. Origin, but this is by no means certain, for a probable 1A/RB system exisited to the N. on the top of the spur. This system is treated on 39 SW 4 These lynchets are visible on AP CPE/UK/1824/4286. <2> A series of medieval strip lynchets lie to the west of Bellamont House, Whatcombe Down. They are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs <4-5>. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
