Listed Building record MDO13632 - Swan Hotel, Market Place, Sturminster Newton
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Mid eighteenth century hotel. Built of brick (basically Flemish bond but extensive use made of rubbed and gauged brickwork together with header bond in vitrified brick). Has a tiled roof with brick stacks and an unusual classical façade, where two central bays carry a pediment. The two outer bays are flanked by Doric pilasters bearing Tudor roses; the abaci of which are continuous with an eaves cornice. Similar pilasters flank the two central bays but a central pilaster carries a complete Doric entablature into the tympanum of the pediment.
