Full Description

"An ancient British village". <1> Field Systems plotted from air photographs. <3> Scarps and banks of minor importance, perhaps the remains of Celtic cultivations. <4> 4. An area of field banks and lynchets forming small irregular fields of IA/RB type is visible on AP CPE/UK/2431/3153:54 The system covers three modern fields. In the most westerly, A, the lynchets are pronounced, up to 1.2m high, with associated field banks. This part is under grass, and has been incorrectly described as "BRITISH VILLAGE" on OS 6". No evidence of habitation was seen during investigation. Area B is under grass but all traces of the system have been destroyed by ploughing. Area C is similar to that at A, with field banks and lynchets in rough pasture. <5> Field system of probable later prehistoric and/or Roman date, on the southern slopes of Askerswell Down, visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. <6-8>
