Full Description

The Hospice of "La JULIAN" was founded prior to 1437, for in this year it was given to the ALMSHOUSE of ST JOHN THE BAPTIST and ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST [For which see 6 SW 16]. In 1446-47 it is known as "LA JULIANYSINNE" (ie La Julian's Inn) and in 1451-2 it is called "the hospice of saint Julian". <2> The history of the JULIAN subsequent to 1437, for the last 500 yrs., is to be found in the Almshouse Charters and Account Rolls [Unpublished]. This building - so called 'ST THOMAS A BECKET'S Chapel' - is mis-named; it had nothing to do with ST.THOMAS A BECKET, and was never a chapel. <2> The house consists of a gabled cross-wing and part of the range running N. for it. It was built early in the 16thc. At the W. Angles of the wing are broken ends, probably of former buttresses, now removed. The ground floor W. room as original ceiling beams with bosses carved with foliage and the arms of the abbey. There is also 17th c. work in the house. <3> [The RCHM <2> name the building "BECKET'S CHAPEL" but it is scheduled under the name "THE JULIAN ON THE GREEN"; There is also a discrepancy in the date of the hospice for while it is described as 16thc. (Authy <3>) there is no mention in Authority <2> of a rebuilding, and it is assumed to be 15thc.] The building is now generally known as the JULIAN HOSPICE, or "The JULIAN on the GREEN". <4> The building is in good condition and is now used as the Sherborne Branch Public Library. The centre of the W. front has been rebuilt or restored. On the N. Side of the building is an archway 3.0m wide and with a maximum height of 3.0m, which appears to be the only part of the N. range of buildings which was associated with the hospital. The part above the arch is mainy modern and of brick construction, and is now incorporated in the George Hotel. The 16thc. Date given by authority T2 <3> would seem to be correct. (The George Inn, ST 61 NW 65, is thought to have formed part of the Hospice.) <6> No 1 Cheapside, former Hospice of St Julian (formerly listed as St-Thomas-a-Becket Chapel).<7>
