Full Description
This house is said to have a C15 or C16 origin. The front as existing appears to be largely early or mid C19 Gothic Revival work, but the central oriel may be partly original. Front is 2 storey, 3 window, stone, with two gables. Between these is a carved parapet. 4-light stone mullioned windows with cusped heads to lights, the central 1st floor window being an oriel. 4-centred arch and carved spandrels to doorway. East side has two large splayed bays with french windows. The L-shaped wing at the back is in a simpler style. Interior has interesting early Gothic Revival woodwork.
This description is derived from the associated designation record, the validity of which has not been checked.
The Manor House. Perhaps late C15th or early C16th; to this date may belong the two front wings formerly represented by a courtyard where the hole now stands. The North wing is C17th and was joined to the main house in the C18th. Remodelled in C19th and again recently. Grade II. <1> <3>
‘Recent work at the Manor House, Newland, has removed details of the trefoiled-headed panels of the corbelling of the oriel window, as well as the partly restored angel which held a shield with arms, thought to be those of Chaldecot.’ <4>
