Monument record MDO1598 - Medieval settlement at Throop, Maiden Newton
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Earthworks interpreted as a medieval settlement. The earthworks are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery and include additional linear banked strip field boundaries and fragments of possible medieval ridge and furrow to the south of Throop Farm, which may be associated. A brick works is shown to the east of Throop Farm on the OS 1st Edition map and it's possible some of the earthworks alternatively relate to this. The features were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project.

Full Description
Earthworks interpreted as a medieval settlement. The earthworks are visible on 1940s aerial photographs and current Lidar imagery and were digitally plotted during the Dorset Upper Frome AIM project (1, 2).
The earthworks appear to comprise a series of small sub-rectilinear banked enclosures to the west of Throop Farm, possibly including the remains of a hollow way. In a field to the south of Throop Farm are additional narrow curvilinear banked strip field boundaries with fragments of possible ridge and furrow cultivation, which may be associated. The OS 1st Edition map shows a brickworks to the west of Throop Farm and earthworks visible in this vicinity may be related to this, although it's possible some are older features associated with a former medieval settlement.
The earthworks are still clearly visible on current Google Earth imagery (3).
