Listed Building record MDO17897 - Lime kiln at Bucknowle, Church Knowle

Please read our .

Summary

A lime kiln recorded as ‘old limekiln’ on the 1900 and 1926 Ordnance Survey maps, ‘limkiln’ on the 2006 O/S map but is not shown on the Tithe map. The kiln was partly built into a bank so that the kiln head was below or level with the quarry floor to facilitate loading. The lime burner's shelter at this kiln is a unique ‘bothy’ with Gothic window and a fireplace built within the structure. It was visited by Peter Stanier in 1992-3 who found it to be complete and in very good condition.
