Summary

The parish church of Saint Peter at Church Knowle is mostly of the first half of the 13th century. The nave, chancel and north and south transepts date from this period. The west tower, and probably the south porch, were added in the 14th century. The tower was rebuilt in the 18th century and the north aisle was added between 1833 and 1841.

Full Description

(SY 94088193) St Peter's Church (NAT) <2> The parish church of Saint Peter at Church Knowle is mostly of the first half of the 13th century. The nave, chancel and north and south transpets date from this period. The west tower, and probably the south porch, were added in the 14th century. The tower was rebuilt in the 18th century and the north aisle was added between 1833 and 1841. Certainly the north transept, and probably the south, contained chantries associated respectively with the lords of the manors of Barnston and East Creech. Cross slab in the church dated to ca.1300. <1, 3> Parish Church of St Peter. Grade II*. <4-5> Part of a recumbent cross-slab with sloping sides and debased foliate decoration is in the South transept of the church. This is clearly post-Conquest, and probably of ca. 1300. <6>
