Monument record MDO17953 - Former Fire Station, South Street, Bridport: medieval pits

Five rubbish pits of 12th – 13th century date were found during the 1996 excavations by Wessex Archaeology on the site of the former Fire Station in South Street, Bridport. Four of these pits were in a row running E-W, perpendicular to the street frontage and may reflect a medieval property boundary.

Five medieval pits of 12th-13th century date were found during the excavation of the site of the former Fire Station , South Street, Bridport by Wessex Archaeology in 1996.(1) (2) (3) Four of the pits were relatively evenly spaced in a line running E-W perpendicular to the street frontage, perhaps reflecting a medieval boundary dividing two properties fronting on to South Street. A single posthole was also found along this line. Another pit was found about seven metres to the north at the east end of the excavation, perhaps lying within another property. (1) The pits were sub-circular and between 1.5m-2.0m in diameter and up to 1.4m deep. The fills contained pottery of 12th-13th century date and frequent animal bone with small quantities of iron smithing slag, fired clay and oyster shell.(1)
