Full Description
Found during the excavations to the north of Maiden Castle Road undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1987 in advance of the Dorchester By-pass construction. The following description is abstracted from the final published report on the site (1). The numbers in square brackets refer to context numbers quoted in the report.
In the central part of the excavation area, a single pit [02292] filled with soils with a high clay content may be Bronze Age in date. It produced three sherds of Bronze Age or later pottery and two sherds of gabbroic ware. Its function is unclear. Two sherds of intrusive Roman pottery were also recovered from this pit.
