Full Description

Found during the excavations at St George's Road, undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1987 in advance of the Dorchester By-pass construction. The following description is abstracted from the final published report on the site (1). The numbers in square brackets refer to context numbers quoted in the report. Two adjacent pits [01413] and [01419] were cut into the ditches associated with the Roman rectangular enclosure system. Pit [01413] was 1.8m in diameter and 0.7m deep filled with chalky soils representing gradual silting. Eight sherds from one vessel of 12th-13th century date were recovered from this pit. Immediately to the north was a second, slightly smaller, pit [01419] which appears to have been filled at the same time as [01413].
