Full Description

Found during the watching brief on the new gas main in High East Street, Dorchester undertaken by Terrain Archaeology in 2005. The remains of a vertically-sided flat-bottomed slot about 0.35m wide and 0.35m deep was observed in the north and south sections of the gas pipe trench [features 130 &106]. It was filled with reddish-brown clay soil with chalk. No finds were recovered. This slot was oriented roughly NNE-SSW and may represent a beam slot for a Roman timber building. No associated floor surfaces were found. If this was part of a building, then it is likely to continue to the west beyond the edge of the gas pipe trench.
