Summary
The remains ofa pit containing Roman building debris was found during a watching brief on a new gas main in High East Street, Dorchester in 2005 by Terrain Archaeology. THis pit contained a large quantity of Roman ceramic roof tile and a lump of opus signinum. This material may have come from the possible Roman building 115/117 found immediately to the south during the same watching brief.

Full Description
Found during the watching brief on the new gas main in High East Street, Dorchester undertaken by Terrain Archaeology in 2005.
A Roman pit [feature 134] was observed in the northern section of the new gas pipe trench. It measured 0.7m across and 0.65m deep with near vertical sides and a flat bottom. It was filled with with a loose greyish-brown clay loam with occasional flint nodules, chalk lumps, charcoal flecks and oyster shell. It contained a large quantity of Roman ceramic roof tile and a lump of opus signinum. No secure dating evidence was recovered. This pit contains building debris, perhaps from the demolition of the possible Roman building 115/117 immediately to the south.
