Monument record MDO18192 - Maiden Castle First School (Prince of Wales First School): Late Iron Age pits outside Enclosure 1

Please read our .

Summary

A scatter of pits were found outside the Late Iron Age Enclosure 1 during the 1993 excavations undertaken by AC archaeology on the Maiden Castle First School site (now the Prince of Wales First School). Ten pits were found to the southwest of the enclosure, of which two were excavated. These were storage pits broadly contemporary with the enclosure. A further scatter of pits lay to the south of the enclosure, of which only one was excavated and these appeared to be broadly similar in date and function. The precise relationship between these pits and the Late Iron Age enclosed settlment is not certain, as none of the material from these pits has been studied.

Full Description

The 1993 excavations undertaken by AC archaeology on the Maiden Castle First School site (now the Prince of Wales First School), revealed a scatter of pits to the south and southwest of the Late Iron Age enclosure 1. Ten pits were identified outside enclosure 1. Pits 223, 227, 523, 524 and 525 lay to the southwest of the enclosure. None of the pits had a stratigraphic relationship with the enclosure, though pits 523-525 cut the earliest phase of the ditched trackway, which pre-dated the enclosure. Pits 223 and 227 were completely excavated and produced similar material to that from within the enclosure, so it is likely that this activity is broadly contemporary with the enclosed settlement. The excavated pits were rounded with flat bases and were probably storage pits. Pit 227 contained a significant assemblage of material, but unfortunately this has not yet been studied. To the south of the enclosure was a further scatter of pits (298, 526. 527, 528, 529), of which only one was excavated. This was circular with a flat base and was probably a storage pit.
