Full Description
The 1992 evaluation undertaken by AC archaeology on the Maiden Castle First School site (now the Prince of Wales First School), exposed extensive areas of probable gravel pits to the north of Maiden Castle Road. These comprised large amorphous shallow scoops confined to the areas of deeper flint gravel deposits in the base of the coombe. On the surface they had the appearance of interconnecting pits, often separated by pinnacles of chalk. Where investigated, they were no more than about 0.35m deep. They contained tips of soil and loam, together with fragments of coal, cinders, glass and mid 19th century pottery.
