Full Description

A single medieval pit was partially exposed and excavated as part of a watching brief undertaken by Terrain Archaeology, during the construction of an extension to the rear of 1 Acland Road, Dorchester, in April 2004.(1) (2) The pit was probably circular in plan with steeply sloping sides over 0.6m deep. It was not bottomed. It was filled with dark brown clay soil and stone. It contained a small quantity of animal bone and earlier medieval cookpot sherds (1). This pit would have been just behind a property fronting on to Durngate Street. Similar pits in a similar position to Durngate Street were found during the 1982 excavations at the Old Methodist Chapel site (3).
