Full Description
Evaluation excavation on the site of the former Channon's Garage, High East Street, Dorchester, undertaken by Exeter Archaeology in 2001, revealed traces of a possible Roman road surface in the south end of Trench 6.
A layer of tightly packed flint in a soil matrix, and containing Roman tile fragments, was found at a depth of about two metres below the ground surface. This layer extended beyond the excavated area and was not investigated fully. It was suggested by the excavators (1) that this was part of the make up of a Roman road, as it lies on the projected alignment of a Roman street seen elsewhere in Dorchester to the west of the site during the Old Methodist Chapel excavations and in Durngate Street(2) ().
