Monument record MDO18229 - Channon's Garage, High East Street; Earlier Roman building

Evaluation excavation on the site of the former Channon's Garage, High East Street, undertaken by Exeter Archaeology in 2001, revealed traces of three floors or surfaces, sealed beneath the floor levels of a 3rd-4th century AD Roman building. It is unclear whether these floors lay within an earlier building or were external yard surfaces. No artefacts were recovered from the floors.

Evaluation excavation on the site of the former Channon's Garage, High East Street, Dorchester, undertaken by Exeter Archaeology in 2001, revealed traces of three Roman floors sealed beneath the floor of a late Roman building in Trench 3. The numbers in square brackets are context numbers referred to in the excavation report. In evaluation Trench 3 three Roman surfaces [558] [562] [564], with their associated make-up layer, were found sealed beneath the floor of a probable 3rd-4th century AD Roman building. The earliest surface was constructed directly on the pre-urban clay soil and subsequently replaced/repaired by two further floors. No artefacts were recovered in association with these floors. It is unclear from the small area exposed, whether these floors were internal surfaces within a building or were external yard surfaces. It is possible that they were part of an earlier Roman building subsequently replaced by a substantial Roman town house in the 3rd-4th century.
