Summary

Evaluation excavation on the site of the former Channon's Garage, High East Street, undertaken by Exeter Archaeology in 2001, revealed the remains of a well of post-medieval date. The stone lining in the upper part had been robbed out. This well lay to the rear of the back garden of 7 High East Street. The well was apparently in use into the 20th century.

Full Description

Evaluation excavation on the site of the former Channon's Garage, High East Street, Dorchester, undertaken by Exeter Archaeology in 2001, revealed the remains of a stone-lined well in Trench 1. The upper part of this well had been disturbed by robbing of the stone lining. This well is likely to be post-medieval in date and according to the excavators had been in use within living memory. It lay towards the rear of the garden behind 7 High East Street.
