Monument record MDO18278 - Land West of Poundbury Farm; prehistoric chalk pit
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A large feature was partially exposed and excavated in the southern part of excavation Trench 3, excavated by Wessex Archaeology in 2001. This pit had steep concave sides and a gently concave base and was filled with yellowish-brown soil. A single sherd of Early- Middle Iron Age pottery was recovered from a depth of about 1.5m and worked flint was found throughout the fill. The size and character of this feature suggest that it is probably a quarry pit, probably for chalk to marl the surrounding fields.

Full Description
A large feature, over 6.5m in diameter and 2.6m deep was partially exposed and excavated in the southern part of excavation Trench 3, excavated by Wessex Archaeology in 2001 (1) (2). The featurehad steep concave sides and a gently concave base and was filled with yellowish-brown soil. A single sherd of Early- Middle Iron Age pottery was recovered from a depth of about 1.5m and worked flint was found throughout the fill. The size and character of this feature suggest that it is probably a quarry pit, probably for chalk to marl the surrounding fields. The pottery suggests that the pit was possibly dug in the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age, but its date cannot be determined with any degree of confidence.
