Monument record MDO18279 - Land West of Poundbury Farm; post-medieval chalk pit
Please read our guidance about the use of Dorset Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A large probably roughly circular feature, visible as a shallow depression about 0.5m deep and about 20m in diamete, was partially excavated during an archaeological evaluation of the area to the west of Poundbury Farm by Wessex Archaeology in 2000. A small slot was excavated across part of it, which revealed modern domestic rubbish dating to the 1930s and was sealed by layers of crushed tarmac, chalk and soil. The size and character of this large pit suggests it is likely to have been a post-medieval chalk pit, backfilled with modern rubbish.
